Jaycees Install 2010 Officers

GERMANTON, Maryland, January 11 – The Gaithersburg/Germantown Jaycees installed their 2010 Board of Directors on January 9 during their annual Officer Installation Banquet. The incoming board of directors took the oath of office as administered by 2009 President Jason Silverberg of Gaithersburg. Silverberg in turn was sworn in as the 2009 Chairman of the Board by the Maryland Jaycees State President, Melissa Unger of Derwood.

The chapter's 2010 officers are:

Community Development Vice-President: Kara Farrell, of Germantown.
Individual Development Vice-President: Valerie Lefor, of Gaithersburg.
State Director: Vicente Lopez, of Silver Spring.
Treasurer: Dean Lefor, of Gaithersburg.
Secretary: Valerie Palmer, of Montgomery Village.
Chairman of the Board: Jason Silverberg, of Gaithersburg.

During the banquet, the organization also presented its 2009 year-end awards. The awards presented were:

Rookie of the Year: Valerie Lefor, of Gaithersburg.
Jaycee of the Year: Philip Pezzano, of Montgomery Village.
Associate Jaycee of the Year: Blair Learn, of Germantown.
Board Member of the Year: Katie Skinker, of Germantown.
Management Project of the Year: Germantown Oktoberfest Souvenir Booth, chaired by Valerie Lefor, of Gaithersburg.
Community Project of the Year: Seneca Valley After Prom, co-chaired by Lydia Stockton and Meghan Ryan, of Germantown.
Membership Project of the Year: Membership Bonfire, chaired by Andrew Field, of Rockville.
Individual Development Project of the Year: Self-defense seminar, chaired by Kara Farrell, of Germantown.
Project of the Year: Paint-a-Pumpkin, chaired by Kara Farrell and Stephanie Rago, of Germantown.
Helping Hands of 2009: Jeff Snyder of Damascus; Angela Jandrew of Gaithersburg; Melissa Unger of Derwood; and Lindsay Silverberg of Gaithersburg.

Established in the 1950s, the Gaithersburg/Germantown Jaycees are the Montgomery County chapter of the Maryland Jaycees, the United States Junior Chamber, and Junior Chamber International. Offering a unique combination of Leadership Training through Community Service, the Jaycees organization gives young people the opportunity to develop skills they can use elsewhere in life. Reflecting on Octoberfest

Months of planning came to fruition on October 3 with the Germantown Oktoberfest and again eight days later for the Kentlands Oktoberfest. Events were chaired by two teams: Katie Skinker, Angela Jandrew and Melissa Unger co-chaired the Beer Tent at the Germantown Oktoberfest while Kara Farrell and Stephanie Rago co-chaired the Paint-a-Pumpkin booths at both festivals.

Germantown Oktoberfest

Courtney Marburger and Valerie Palmer started off the day by inventing the Paint-a-Pumpkin dance.

By mid-afternoon, we had a sea of colorfully decorated pumpkins.

Kentlands Oktoberfest

A sea of unpainted pumpkins at the Kentlands Oktoberfest.

A few hours later, many of the pumpkins were painted. Over the course of 5 hours, 237 pumpkins had been painted. That's the most we've ever sold at the Kentlands event.

After painting your pumpkin, you can leave it to dry. We put a numbered flag on each pumpkin and give you a clothespin with the number on it. To keep the clothespin from getting lost, you can attach it to a shirt sleeve, pocket, or as Katie Skinker demonstrates, even an ear.

Germantown Oktoberfest Coverage

The first news story about this year's Germantown Oktoberfest was published last Wednesday. Along with coverage about the activities planned for the festival - including a "Hans and Heidi" costume contest, a Futsal tournament, and, of course, fireworks - the article also included several quotes from G&G Member Katie Skinker (Katie is one of the chapter's representatives on the Oktoberfest Committee). Katie spoke to the reporter about the plans for the beer tent, including plans for a portion of the proceeds to be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The festival took place on Saturday, Oktober 3rd (photos to follow in a later post) and the first "day of the event" article from the Gazette appeared online today. Both the beer tent and Paint-a-Pumpkin booth were mentioned (I think I remember seeing the red, white and blue pumpkin the reporter mentioned) and the Gaithersburg/Germantown Jaycees were mentioned by name. Also appearing in that article were several quotes from Sarah Knetzer who also mentioned our plans to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

(Speaking of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society: There is still time to support G&G's team, The Tumorators, in the society's Light the Night walk.)

Replacing Myself.

When 2007 Community Development VP Nicole Loiselle asked me to chair the AfterProm, I agreed, contingent on one condition: Nicole had to find a co-chair. Specifically, somebody who'd been in the chapter for less than two years.

That way the knowledge and experience would go to someone who wouldn't be aging out right away and they could train the following year's project chair, who would train the next one, and so on. Kate Lindon agreed to co-chair and the project was a success.

My plan for Kate to train her successor was a bit less successful -- she and her husband moved to Pennsylvania so he could attend seminary. I tried to convince Kate to come back for the 2008 AfterProm, but no luck.

In 2008 Claire van Beek, the new Community Development VP, found out that I had experience with the project and asked if I'd chair it again. I gave her the same answer I'd given Nicole, find a co-chair and I'll work with them. A short time later, Kara Farrell agreed to chair the project and we provided food and beverages to the best attended AfterProm party yet.

Kara didn't get the opportunity to mentor this year's AfterProm co-chair. Instead, Lydia Stockton and Meghan Ryan were the veteran-rookie team-up behind a successful 2009 After Prom.

But a funny thing happened. With the confidence of her previous success chairing the AfterProm, Kara decided to chair the Paint-A-Pumpkin booths at last year's Germantown Oktoberfest. I answered some questions and helped out with ideas here and there, but it was definitely Kara's project.

The 2009 Oktoberfest takes place this weekend. The Paint-A-Pumpkin booth is being chaired by Stephanie Rago. Kara's been working with her for the past several months.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Something Fishy

"Remember when you were a kid and you'd go to a parade and ask your parents to get you a balloon?" That was the question Phil Pezzano asked right before Gaithersburg's Labor Day parade.

Phil must have done a pretty good job of asking...check out the balloon!

So what kind of fish is it? Well, according to the official program, it's a green fish. According to the rest of the baloon crew, it's a purple fish, though I'll go as far as to say that the fins are a sort of greenish shade of yellow. There's strong evidence that it's some variety of flying fish, or perhaps a kissing gourami.

Other parade memories:

Endless fish puns ("I'm having trouble herring you!")
Ducking under utility lines while shouting "Dive, dive, dive!" or "Reel it in!"
Our new vocabulary word: Caddywhompus, adjective meaning broken, crazy, or messed up. (This word brought to you by Katiewhompus.)
Speculating whether the parade's commemorative coins were made of plastic, aluminum, or chocolate.
Nicole losing track of her kazoo and Katie losing track of her pet rat.

After the parade we adjourned to the Silver Diner for a late lunch before heading our separate ways around 4:00. It was a long day, but it was fun.

In the Mood – to Dance!

Don't forget that our Swing Dance event is coming up this Saturday evening.

Never danced before? Not a problem! Show up before 8:00 and a free introductory swing dance lesson is included in the price of admission! Tom Koerner and Debra Sternberg of GottaSwing will put on a lesson that will have you dancing in no time. (And even if you already know how to dance, the lesson they put on will definitely keep your attention.)

Need some reasons to try dancing? It's great exercise! It's an excellent opportunity to socialize (and not just other Jaycees – anyone who says Swing is for “old people” has never gone to a dance). Guys – dancing is one of the only times we're ever in charge! Gals – there's no pressure on you, when something goes wrong, it's the guy's fault! (That one's always true, but work with me here, OK?)

Bonus: If you stick around until 11, you'll get to see three or four (possibly more) couples demonstrate that gravity is completely optional.

If you'd like to take part in the lesson (included in the price of admission), you should plan on being there by 8pm. (Gottaswing frequently has sellouts, so you might want to shoot for 8:00 or 8:30 regardless.) What to wear? Dress comfortably (the Spanish Ballroom has no air conditioning). If you have leather‐soled shoes, bring them. (Ladies: give serious thought to leaving the heels at home.)

Bike Rodeo

The G&G Jaycees will be hosting a bicycle rodeo on August 29 from 10am to noon at the Blackhills Regional Park in Boyds Maryland.

Children of all ages are invited to come out to receive information about area bike paths and clubs, the kinds of food to take on a bicycle trip, and to see a bicycle safety demonstration. At 11:00 there will be a bicycling competition course for the kids.

The event in being presented in cooperation with the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, Potomac Pedalers, and the Safe Kids Coalition.

Back to school? Already?

Back-to-School sales manage to surprise me every year. But now, just in time for the Back To School Backpack Drive, Target is having a sale on school supplies -- 50 cents for a 24 count box of pencils, 27 cents for a box of 24 Crayola crayons (domestically produced!), 60 cents for a four-pack of notebooks and so on.

This is a great opportunity to pick up a few items for the backpacks full of school supplies we'll be providing to children at The Dwelling Place.

After the Afterprom

Afterprom co-chairs Meghan Ryan and Lydia Stockton did a fantastic job with this year's Afterprom project. Thanks to a phone-calling campaign, 20 or more Jaycees were present for set up. The numbers always drop off overnight, but even at 5:00am there were still 10 people to help with the clean-up efforts.

The PTSA had told Meghan and Lydia to expect up to 600 students to attend the Afterprom and they were ready! Available food ran the gamut from pizza and subs to cookies, brownies, fresh fruit and doughnuts.

A little trivia about this project and its co-chairs: This year's Afterprom is the first Jaycees project Meghan has ever chaired. She's in good company though; in 2001, the Afterprom was Lydia's first time chairing.

It's a job well done to both.

Desert of the Month

The April Desert of the Month is Wyoming's Red Desert. The Red Desert is located in the South-Central portion of the state and occupies more than 9,000 square miles. The Red Desert was formed by a division along the Continental Divide and is the largest living dune system in the United States.

After visiting the heat of the desert, it's only natural that you'd want some ice cream, so celebrate the Red Desert by joining your Jaycee friends for dessert at Marble Slab in the Kentlands (510 Main Street) on April 1st at 7:00. And because that's also April Fools Day (a very important holiday in its own right), Jaycee members in attendance who wear a funny hat will be eligible to win a suitably foolish prize.

Update: It appears there may have been a typo at some point. This event is, of course, the Dessert of the Month. But do be sure to wear a silly hat.

Helping Those in Need

GAITHERSBURG, Maryland, February 1 – "With all the layoffs and financial problems in the news these days, Manna's services are more in demand than ever," said Shondra Jenkins while speaking at a meeting of the Gaithersburg/Germantown Jaycees. Jenkins, a member of the board of directors for Manna Food Center, explained that donations of both money and non-perishable food items are vital in allowing Manna to serve more than 3,100 Montgomery County families each month.

Jenkins' presentation to the Jaycees took place during the group's first meeting of the year on January 26. For the Jaycees, a highlight of the presentation was being able to present Manna with a check for $200. President Jason Silverberg explained, "At the end of 2008, we found we had some extra money in the budget and decided to put it back into the community." During her talk Jenkins explained that cash donations help Manna buy bulk-food and necessities such as truck maintenance. Maryland Jaycees Convention, February 27 - March 1

Celebrate the year-end with the Maryland Jaycees and come to convention in Waldorf, MD. Early registration ends on January 31st at $50 for the full package; after that the price will increase. The convention location is the Greater Waldorf Jaycees service center and the hotel is the Courtyard Marriott across the street. We will reserve two rooms for chapter members: one for the ladies and one for the men. The chapter will pay for one night per room (if there are a minimum of two people per room). Please contact Melissa Unger if you will would like to stay in one of the chapter rooms.

Joe Corbi's Pizza and Cookie Dough

It's that time of year again! Joe Corbi's Fundraiser. Help our chapter raise money by selling yummy cookies and lip smackin' pizzas from this great company to your family, friends and co workers. They make great gifts and treats for anyone in your life. Brochure order forms were distributed at January's meeting (but connect with Valerie if you weren't able to make the meeting and want to join in on the fun!) and orders collected at February's meeting. Incoming President Jason Silverberg of Gaithersburg took the oath of office as administered by 2002 President Angela Jandrew, also of Gaithersburg. Silverberg in turn swore in the remainder of the 2009 board members.

G&G Members Win State Honors

GAITHERSBURG, Maryland, December 12, 2008 – At an award ceremonies on November 21 in Timonium, members of the Gaithersburg/Germantown Junior Chamber (G&G Jaycees) were honored by their parent organization, the Maryland Jaycees.

Courtney Marburger of Germantown was named as “Rookie of the Quarter,” an award given only to those who have been members of the organization for less than a year. Marberger joined the Jaycees in late August of this year and by the end of October had become an active member of the organization, including being the chapter's liaison to the Germantown Oktoberfest.

Lindsay Silverberg of Gaithersburg was recognized as the "Helping Hand of the Quarter," an award given in recognition of those who work “behind the scenes” withing the organization. In addition to actively participating in the G&G Jaycees' events, Silverberg stepped forward to fill a position on the chapter's Board of Directors when the previous officeholder unexpectedly moved out of the area.

Additionally, Germantown residents Nicole Loiselle and Blair Learn were presented with memberships in the Maryland Jaycees Militia. Membership in the Maryland Jaycees Militia conveys a lifetime membership in the Maryland Jaycees and is the highest honor an individual Jaycee can achieve within the Maryland Jaycees.

Loiselle has been a member of the Gaithersburg/Germantown Jaycees since 2003, has served on the Board of Directors in 2004 and 2007, received numerous local, state and national awards, and has been been responsible for organizing chapter projects such as Read Across America, multiple school supply drives, and also organized the chapter's participation in the City of Gaithersburg's Bark in the Park festival.

Learn has been a member of the Gaithersburg/Germantown Jaycees since 2000; served on the chapter's Board of Directors in 2000, 2001, 2004 and 2005; served on the State Board of Directors in 2007; received numerous local and state awards; and has been been responsible for organizing chapter projects such as a bi-monthly blood drive and providing food and beverages for the Seneca Valley High School's After Prom party. From 2004 to 2007 he was the G&G Jaycees representative on the Germantown Oktoberfest committee.

GERMANTOWN, Maryland, – Join the Gaithersburg/Germantown Jaycees for their monthly dessert at 7:30 pm on Friday, December 12th at the Panera Bread located in the Gaithersburg Square Shopping Center at 598 North Frederick Avenue, Gaithersburg. Afterwards join the group for a ride through Seneca Creek Park to enjoy the Winter Lights Festival.

The Winter Lights display features more than 380 illuminated vignettes and 65 animated displays in a 3.5 mile drive through the park. The lights are centered on a variety of themes which include Winter Woods, Teddy Bear Land, Victorian Village, North Pole Toyland and Penguin Cove.

Kentlands Community Newsletter

Searching for mentions of "G&G" on Google, I found some new stuff in the November edition of the Kentlands community newsletter (PDF).

Right off the bat, the photo in the Page 1 masthead simply must be from the Paint-a-Pumpkin chaired by Kara Farrell.

From there, I searched the newsletter for the word "Jaycees" and on page 12 found a mention of our participation in the City of Gaithersburg's "Jingle Jubilee" where we'll be giving away free hot chocolate.

Finally, I went to the Oktoberfest article on Page 10. I didn't find any additional mentions of G&G; likewise, no additional Paint-a-Pumpkin photos. But at the very top of page 10, wearing a Jaycees T-shirt (and doing a darn good job of spreading Jaycees awareness), I'm 99% certain that tiger is in fact our very own Courtney Marberger.

GAITHERSBURG, Maryland, November 24 – During their Monthly Membership Meeting on November 24, the Gaithersburg/Germantown Jaycees elected their 2009 Board of Directors.

Jaycees Celebrate Halloween in Gaithersburg

GAITHERSBURG, Maryland, October 28, 2008 – The Gaithersburg Germantown Jaycees (“G&G Jaycees”) will be joining the City of Gaithersburg's Halloween Fest celebration at the concert pavilion in front of City Hall on October 31 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. In addition to the costume parade and other activities put on by the city, the Jaycees will be providing free beverages for the ghouls and goblins in attendance (and for the parents as well).

Organizing the group's participation in an event such as this provides individual Jaycees the opportunity to develop organization and planning skills they can use elsewhere in life. Additionally, providing the beverages for an event such as this allows the Jaycees to give something back to the community as a way of thanking the community for their support during the year. Gaithersburg Observes Jaycee Week

GAITHERSBURG, Maryland, October 8 – During a Gaithersburg City Council meeting on October 6, Mayor Sidney Katz issued a proclamation designating the week of October 12 – 18 as “Gaithersburg/Germantown Jaycee Week” in the city of Gaithersburg. The Jaycees are a volunteer organization comprised of young men and women interested in improving their careers, networking, and/or gaining new skills and experiences. The Gaithersburg/Germantown Jaycees have assisted the city's Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture through numerous means in the last eight years, providing volunteer support to city-sponsored events including the Bark in the Park festival, Celebrate Gaithersburg, and the Halloween Fest at City Hall, to name but a few. The Proclamation was accepted by Claire van Beek, Community Development Vice President of the Gaithersburg/Germantown Jaycees.

Jaycees Celebrate Oktoberfest

GAITHERSBURG, Maryland, September 29 – The Gaithersburg Germantown Jaycees ("G&G Jaycees") will be bringing their popular Paint-A-Pumpkin booth to the Oktoberfest celebration at the Kentlands Mansion in Gaithersburg's Kentlands neighborhood on October 12th from noon – 4:00pm.

Upon visiting the Paint-a-Pumpkin booth, artists of all ages will have the opportunity to decorate a pumpkin in their own unique style. And because the pumpkins are painted instead of carved, the likelihood of the artwork lasting until Halloween is greatly improved.

Running fund raising projects such as these provides individual Jaycees the opportunity to develop entrepreneurial skills and gain the experience of running a small business for a day. Jaycees Raise Awareness for American Kidney Fund

GERMANTOWN, Maryland, September 22, 2008 – On September 28 the Gaithersburg/Germantown Jaycees (“G&G Jaycees”) will participate in the American Kidney Fund's (AKF) "Steps that Count" fundraising walk in Washington, D.C. Proceeds from this event will help people with kidney disease live more fully and make it easier for high-risk individuals in the D.C. metro area to receive free kidney health screenings and education.

Through their MIKE® (Minority Intervention and Kidney Education) Program, The American Kidney Fund offers free medical screenings, nutrition and fitness presentations, and follow-up services (including medical referrals and public education materials) for people who are most at risk for kidney disease. These services are provided at a variety of venues including churches, expositions and community festivals, dialysis centers, community centers, colleges, and corporate offices.

Getting a Good Buzz

On Monday, September 1, as in years past, The Gaithersburg/Germantown Jaycees participated in the City of Gaitherburg's annual Labor Day Parade. We were paired up with the Silver Spring group Wheels of Thunder and assigned to guide a balloon, "Gary the Glitterbug" (a large bee) along the parade route.

The parade stepped off at 1:00 pm with us in the number 13 position. There was an antique car immediately ahead of us, and in the spot ahead of that was "Sprokit the Robot."

After we passed the reviewing stand and turned onto Russell Avenue, Sprokit pulled over to the side in order to switch over to a new battery pack. A few minutes later, several Jaycees were startled when Sprokit briefly joined us, short-cutting through the middle of our group and under the bee!

After 37 minutes and two miles we arrived at the end of parade route. Along the way we ducked under numerous utility wires, waved to thousands of people (Kids love bees! Who knew?!), and a good time was had by all.

The only thing missing, much to Gary's dismay, was a 50 foot flower to match.

Area Residents Win State Honors

GAITHERSBURG, Maryland, August 25, 2008 – At award ceremonies in Timonium, members of the Gaithersburg/Germantown Junior Chamber (G&G Jaycees) were honored by their parent organization, the Maryland Jaycees.

For the Second Quarter, the Gaithersburg/Germantown Jaycees received numerous awards due to their involvement in the community. Claire Van Beek of Germantown was named as the First Place John J. Schissler, Jr. Community Development Vice President of the Quarter and was also the Community Development Vice President of the Month for April. Katie Skinker of Germantown was honored as the Rookie of the Quarter and the Jaycee of the Month for April. Keith Sallerson of Gaithersburg was the Associate Member of the Quarter. Andrew Field of Rockville was recognized as the Helping Hand of the Quarter.

The G&G Jaycees were awarded the Community Development Chapter of the Quarter for the Second Quarter. The chapter also received the Suzanne F. Wible Chapter of the Month award for April and the Second Place Chapter of the Quarter. The chapter organized and participated in several major events and activities during the quarter including Bark in the Park in Gaithersburg, the Seneca Valley High School’s After Prom party, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, and several fundraisers.

Jaycees Collect School Supplies

GAITHERSBURG, Maryland, August 13, 2008 – The Gaithersburg/Germantown Jaycees (“G&G Jaycees”) are collecting school supplies for children in area schools. The supplies most needed are basics, including pens, pencils, paper, folders, erasers, binders, etc. There is also a need for backpacks.

The final school supply collection for this year will take place during the G&G Jaycees' August membership meeting at the Bohrer Park Activity Center in Gaithersburg. The meeting will take place on August 25 starting at 7:00PM. This year's drive has so far produced four shopping bags full of supplies with more expected at the meeting. A similar collection drive in 2007 yielded six full backpacks and more than 12 shopping bags full of supplies.
